Seeking Permission

“It feels like we have been here forever” Delaney said to Spencer as they waited outside of the therapist office. Spencer was holding an expandable and retractable Hoberman Sphere ball. The lobby had an aquarium in it with a pufferfish and pink anemones and art of optical illusions on the wall.

“How did you find this guy anyways? This office is already creeping me out” Spencer replied. “Give me that!” Delaney snatched the ball from Spencer and doubted that this session would go over smoothly. She wanted to make a positive first impression when Gerald opened the door to meet them.

“You know we could have used cousin’s services instead of driving all the way uptown to do this right?” Spencer folded his hands in his lap and sat now more obediently and patiently waited. He was wearing his business clothes a Hall Madden suit and Prada Luna Rossa cologne circa 2012 they year he met Delaney.

“If you didn’t sneak into my kitchen we wouldn’t have to be here. I refuse to see you with your unstable behavior and need to make sure you are not a sociopath. This is the only way I can see our relationship going forward, it’s the sacrifice you are going to have to make” Delaney said.

“Come on, you know it was fun. How did you even get this arranged without Zach knowing, aren’t you worried he’ll find out?” Spencer replied.

“Everything is confidential, he won’t find out. There was a greater chance he was home when you broke in, and you weren’t worried about that” Delaney could really be doing better things with her time, yet she was hopelessly in love with Spencer. He was irresistible to her and made her feel constantly on edge. He was completely unpredictable and dangerous.

They had met in college, and it had only been since the past couple of years that they had reconnected when they ran into each other at an ice cream shop in Park Hill. She was getting a scoop, and he was getting someone’s number. They had gotten pretty close although Delaney was married to Zach. Her unavailability is what allowed him to open up to her and the impossibility of them ever being together was a recipe for fun.

The door open and Gerald gestured for them to enter the room. He had curly brown hair, a peppered beard, and rectangular glasses. He was slightly shorter than Spencer who stood at 6ft, but slightly taller than Delaney who was 5’6. Delaney’s red stilettos clicked on the floor as she couldn’t take big strides in her pin striped pencil skirt. Her hair was brown and shoulder length slightly wavy, and she was wearing a white fuzzy turtleneck sweater. She had heard that people appeared saintly in the color white, so she had intentionally wore it.

“I am Gerald, it’s nice to meet the both of you. I have a background in martial counseling and have been in private practice for 23 years. What bring you to therapy” Gerald stated as he took a seat after Spencer and Delaney.

“I am here to prove my undying love for Delaney. She has been considering dissolving our marriage because she hasn’t been able to trust me”.

Naturally Spencer took the lead as was the dynamic between the two of them and the only thing that they were on the same page about what that they were here presenting to Geral and the Hollaway’s ~ a married couple. This wasn’t mature of them to lie and enter therapy under aliases, but nothing about either of them was mature or this was a typical charade that would occur on a regular basis.

Delaney did not disagree or rebuttal Spencer when her turn to talk presented itself. The truth is neither of them were going to let the therapist in and were well aware of their issues and in particular the one that brought them there – Spencer being a ‘sociopath’.

“I would be better able to trust Spencer, if I understood his intentions and I wanted to see if there are any diagnosis that might explain some of the things that have been happening in our relationship.”

Spencer’s jacket was off now, and he was wearing a polo knit shirt, Delaney began rubbing his arm and had to stop herself, but she could barely keep her hands off of him. For the sake of Gerald being there reading them, she stopped and realized she was already getting nervous and put her hands underneath her ass.

“So, you are looking for any traits that would match and diagnostic criteria? What are you looking to get out of therapy?”

Spencer answered, “Therapeutic conversation, we are looking to get the most information out of this dialogue.”

“Delaney would you agree?” Gerald said.
